Herbal medicine is one of the practices utilized under the system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM originated in China and is based on the concept that disease results from disruption in the flow of qi (pronounced 'chee') and imbalance in the forces of yin and yang. In addition to herbs, practices such as meditation, massage, and acupuncture seek to aid healing by restoring the yin-yang balance and the flow of qi. Herbal remedies are given to strengthen and support organ system function. They are used to treat a wide variety of conditions, from chronic pain to insomnia to digestive problems. Herbs, which can be used as a stand-alone therapy or as a complement to acupuncture, come in a variety of forms, including tablets, capsules, powders, teas, extracts and fresh or dried plants. When used appropriately, herbal remedies are safe and without side effects.
