April 10th marks the start of World Homeopathy Awareness Week (WHAW) in 2009 -- April 10-16. This day marks the 254th anniversary of the birth of the founder of homeopathy, Samuel Frederick Hahnemann, to whom this year's event is dedicated. Sponsored by World Homeopathy Awareness Organization (WHAO), World Homeopathy Awareness Week will be celebrated in over 45 countries worldwide. This non-profit organization is incorporated in Holland, where it received official non-profit recognition last February.

Observance of World Homeopathy Awareness Week first took place in 2005. Information about the United States branch can be found at www.usahomeopathy.org. Other participating countries are spread around the entire globe and include: Hungary, Israel, Kenya, Pakistan, Serbia, Spain, Ireland, Croatia, Finland, Armenia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Nepal, Australia, Bosnia, Denmark, Greece, India, Lithuania, New Zealand, Slovakia, Romania, South Africa Egypt, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Australia, Brazil and many others.

The theme for this year's event is "Homeopathy and Allergies". Homeopathy has a long history in effective treatment of allergies and allergic conditions. Thirty five million American suffer from allergies each year according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI). Research has shown that homeopathy can be effective in relieving allergy symptoms. Two studies reported in Lancet demonstrated homeopathy's healing effect. In research published on Dec. 12, 1994 and on October 18, 1986, allergy sufferers showed significant relief when they were treated with homeopathic remedies.

There are many remedies that can be used homeopathically to treat allergies and a qualified homeopath can advise you on your personal condition. You may find relief from one of the homeopathic remedies sold over-the-counter in many health food stores. One common homeopathic remedy for hay fever is Allium cepa, made from onions. Using the principal of "like cures like," homeopathy finds that the same tearing of the eyes that is caused by an onion can be cured by a remedy made from that substance. For that reason, Allium cepa is used to treat the type of allergies that have bland, runny clear mucus running from either the nose or the eyes. The person may also have a frontal headache at the same time, and find that the symptoms are worse after exposure to damp winds. These are the conditions calling for Allium cepa.

Another common homeopathic allergy medicine is Arsenicum album. This remedy treats allergy symptoms that include burning tears and nasal mucus (as opposed to the bland mucus of Allium). The symptoms of those needing this remedy are worse after midnight and usually accompanied by anxiety, thirst and restlessness.

Homeopathy provides relief for allergy sufferers and for many other conditions. Watch for news about homeopathy in your area during World Homeopathy Awareness Week and contact a qualified homeopathic practitioner for guidance about your specific health concerns.
